Rookie Bass Angler: December 2012

December Bass on lures.

It was not until late Friday night that we decided to bite the bullet and set off to chase the last bars of silver for 2012.

Saturday was far from ideal conditions, the sea was flat calm and the temperature had dropped dramatically.  Needless to say we fished hard but blanked, was this trip just one step too far?

Familiar faces and a stack load of Bass . . .

With it being a last minute trip we hadn't got in touch with any of the local lads down there. On the Sunday morning we bumped into our good friend Crevan and his mate Barry at a mark - conditions looked like they were starting to switch on with the wind moving into the South East - Perfect.

We got down onto the mark and Crevan and Barry started to work the ground first - we followed behind them. We stood in shear amazement as they hit the first few Bass and even had double hook ups. It is fantastic to see Bass switching on the feed.

Shallow running lures, soft plastics and the cracker Black Minnow were all taking fish!

It wasn't too long before we hit into some Schoolies ourselves.

There was a noticeable difference between the Bass now and earlier in the Summer - These little ones were  tubs!

Half way through the session Crevan smashed into a brute of a fish - A stunning 10 lb bar of silver! It is always a privilege to see these stunning fish and watch them swim back to fight another day.

The action kept on coming thick and fast for the rest of the session with numerous Schoolies being caught.

The session ended with over twenty Bass between the four of us, I think I am correct in saying it was the first lure caught Bass we had all caught in the month of December. That in itself was an achievement and for Crevan to get a double was the icing on the cake.

Perfect little Bass just after nailing a Feed Shallow.

Sadly it all had to end at some point, as we headed for home our thoughts started to turn to next season and wonder what 2013 had in store for us.

The lure gear isn't packed away just yet - there are still a few rogue Pollack and Wrasse out there with my name on it, so if the weather plays ball I shall try and get out over the holidays.

Stay tuned.
